Cricket on Heatherside

Created by Graham 3 years ago
Not many people would know but Richard was also Captain of the Wheatsheaf (Heatherside) cricket team!  The team was conceived with the purpose of giving cricket loving pilots the opportunity to play as, in those days, junior pilots worked every weekend.  Bidline!
Richard and I purchased all the team’s equipment from a sports shop in Calcutta (to the best of my recollection!) on our Indian stopovers.  Stumps, bails, gloves, bats and some very odd shaped balls all kept in Richard’s old school cricket bag.
I don’t remember actually playing a competitive match but the practice sessions were a spectacular success.  The Wheatsheaf was our pavilion and clubhouse!
Richard, as Captain, always “took” the gloves.  His agile performances behind the stumps were legendary and he always stood a respectful distance back to receive my off-break dollies!
Happy memories.
